Vital Habits: October 25, 2024 - V35


Hi Reader,

When I began my health journey, I had no idea where to start. The sh*t was overwhelming.

​

There was no roadmap.

There was no mainstream education.

There were no real answers.

​

There was only western medicine.

​

I became curious, sought out information, ask questions, connected with holistic providers. I built my own self-care network. My physician became my partner and we worked together to improve my health.

​

I am often asked how did I do it. Here is exactly how I took control of my health:

  1. Found my "why"
  2. Changed my entire diet
  3. Read, read, and read some more
  4. Partnered with an IFM-certified functional physician (do your research)
  5. Ran extensive labs (bloodwork, homocysteine, gut, hormones, etc)
  6. Made lifestyle modifications to influence homeostasis
  7. Rinse and repeat

I haven't taken a pharmaceutical in over 9 years. They are not a solution– they are a bandaid. Every shortcut comes with a cost.

HEALTH is an INSIDE JOB.

It's a LIFESTYLE– not a diet fad, or get fit quick scheme.

​

You have to do the work.

You have to commit.

You have to do it like your life depends on it– because it does!

Food is Medicine

In my opinion, food is 90% of the health equation, and learning how to eat is extremely important. Funny I even have to say that–we intuitively know exactly what we need to eat. Unfortunately, we are constantly surrounded by fast and cheap "frankenfoods" that find their way into our diets. Heck, 90% of the grocery store is not real food.

As mentioned above, reading is the most important flex you can make. One of the very first books I read was Integrative Nutrition: Feed Your Hunger for Health & Happiness by Joshua Rosenthal (Founder of IIN). If you are trying to figure out how foods you are eating are either healing or hurting you - this is a fantastic ice breaker into nutrition. While I do not agree with everything in this book, the majority of this book will completely shift your mind on human nutrition.

There are TONS of books on human nutrition, but the best way not to get overwhelmed is to start with the basics. This book does a nice job and provides valuable insight to make changes NOW!
